Good Enough for Government Work
Question: What does Texas have in common with Russia, China and North Korea?
For each, the same party has controlled its government for over 20 years.
How could Texas land in the same group with North Korea?
Our political parties gerrymander voting districts so well that 95% of congressional races have no competition. Ninety-five percent! If you occasionally use a curse word or two, now would be a good time to do that.
Everyone knows competition, in anything, improves results. But today, the most competitive economy in the world elects its leaders in the least competitive way. This is why our system is broken. It explains how a fringe segment of one party can control our entire state government. This is where “Bathroom bills” come from.
Legislators can’t give us fair districts. If I’m elected governor, I’ll create an Independent Citizens Commission to draw districts that represent people, not parties. Texas should lead in supporting competitive elections, and I’ll work with other large state delegations to pass similar protections.
Fair congressional districting prevents fringe candidates from controlling government and acts as a term limit without needing to limit terms. Our congressional districts can’t just be “good enough for government work”. If we get this right, we get our country back. It’s worth it to me. Is it worth it to you?
Politicians play games. Let's do right.
